John Dillon - My Blog

2010

It's the first day of 2010, not just a new year, but a new decade. Someone said that we often over estimate what can be done in a year, but under estimate what can be done in 10. Looking back on the last ten years, I see amazing change in the world and in my personal life. It is amazing and a bit unnerving to consider that there will be twice that change in the next ten years when we arrive at 2020.

I am high up in down town San Francisco looking out the waters of the bay. I can see the spans of the San Francisco Bay Bridge. There is little traffic this morning as most people have chosen to stay home, perhaps to let the excesses of the new year celebration subside. This is a good time to think about life. Your own life. I just had a birthday. One of those big ones with a ZERO in it. So what will I do these next ten years. I don't want to be a "human being", I want to be a "human doing." And as I get older, I have become more and more aware, that one day, I won't be here to celebrate the possibilities and excitement of a new year. So, time is of the essence.

This brings me back to self-evaluation and a consideration as to what is my "purpose". Do I have one? And what is it?

So, now, back to my coffee and more immediate tasks at hand - getting Engine Yard (my company) ready for 2010. I will use the rest of this long weekend to get myself ready for 2010 and the new decade.

CELEBRATE LIFE ! It's an amazing journey. - JD
